Some nonprofits set themselves apart, but yours stands out by bringing people together. Nonprofits with the Citizen brand personality thrive on inclusion and fairness. They use authenticity, relatability, and community-building to create a sense of belonging where everyone feels welcome, seen, and valued.

You can unite diverse groups under a shared purpose and create the kind of trust that makes your community proud to stand with you.

Chances are, you’re already living into this personality in many ways, that’s why it showed up for you! This profile simply names the strengths you naturally bring and shows how leaning more intentionally into them can help your brand shine even brighter.

But here’s the challenge for Citizens: you have to be crystal clear about the causes people are rallying around. To help you lean into your brand’s personality with intention, we’ve broken it down into what we call the 4 T’s.

What Are the 4 T’s?

Your brand personality is a lot like a person – it has core truths, natural strengths, blind spots, and a signature style. The 4 T’s are a simple way to understand and use your nonprofit’s personality so you can connect more deeply with your existing community and attract new people to your mission.

Here are the four sides of your brand to consider:

  • Truths: The core of who your nonprofit is and what you’re known for.
  • Talents:  Practical ways you can use your personality in storytelling and fundraising.
  • Traits:  How your brand looks, sounds, and interacts with the world.
  • Traps: Common pitfalls that can keep your strengths from shining.

How the 4 T’s Show Up for the Citizen

Truths 💛

You’re the neighbor everyone wants on their block. You make people feel like they belong, no matter who they are or where they come from. Your strength is showing that we’re all in this together, and supporters proudly stand with your mission because it feels like standing with community itself.

Talents ⭐️

Citizen brands thrive on inclusivity and approachability. People are drawn to you because you naturally:

  • Champion equity, inclusion, and fairness
  • Make your work approachable and relatable
  • Collaborate across communities for shared solutions

Your approachable, down-to-earth style builds broad trust and helps people see themselves in your story.
You may already be doing some of these things, but here are a few intentional ways to keep building on that strength:

  • Unite diverse groups under a common purpose so your brand becomes a badge of belonging
  • Use plain, accessible language that reflects fairness and equity
  • Host collaborative events that bring people together across communities
  • Create spaces (in-person or online) where supporters can connect and feel part of something bigger

Traits 🪞

The Citizen personality is rooted in familiarity, authenticity, and approachability. If your organization already gravitates toward earthy design choices and humble messaging, this is why. Below are a few ways to amplify those instincts in your visual and verbal brand identity:

  • Design Style
    • Approachable, simple, chunky icons and rough geometric shapes
    • Natural, candid photography that captures everyday moments
    • Visuals that feel genuine and unpolished rather than staged
  • Colors
    • Earthy, natural hues like soft greens, browns, and blues
    • Muted, welcoming tones that convey warmth and trust
  • Fonts
    • Practical, easy-to-read sans-serif fonts
    • Styles that keep things simple, direct, and down-to-earth
  • Voice & Tone
    • Friendly, humble, and practical
    • Approachable language, as if talking to a neighbor or close friend
    • Solutions-oriented, with sincerity and warmth

Traps ⚠️

Sometimes being so approachable and relatable can make your brand fade into the background. Watch for these pitfalls:

  • Blending in so much that your unique voice disappears
  • Inspiring agreement without inspiring action
  • Focusing so much on inclusivity that your distinct mission gets lost

Stay welcoming and collaborative, but don’t be afraid to lead boldly and remind people why your work matters and what you’re working towards!
