Why Your Nonprofit Struggles to Explain What You Actually Do…and How to Fix It with the SPARK Strategy
-
Lauren Atherton
Let’s be honest: you didn’t start your nonprofit to become a master marketer.
You started it to make a difference.
But if you’re constantly struggling to explain your mission in a way that people actually understand — and care about — you’re not alone. So many nonprofit leaders find themselves repeating the same sentences over and over, only to be met with blank stares, polite nods, or worse… a quick subject change.
You know your work is important. But if others don’t get it, they’re not going to donate, volunteer, or champion your cause.
What you really need is a clear, confident way to talk about what your nonprofit does — in a way that connects with the right people and inspires them to take action.
And that’s exactly what my SPARK Strategy helps you do. In this post, I’m pulling back the curtain on the exact framework I use to help nonprofit founders and executive directors like you get crystal clear on their brand — so they can raise more awareness, more money, and more impact.
Curious what it looks like to finally feel confident in your message? Let’s jump in.
What is the SPARK Strategy?
The SPARK Strategy is the first (and most foundational!) phase of the Brand Level-Up process. It’s where we step back from logos, templates, or deliverables and define the strategic direction your brand should grow toward.
And while it anchors our larger work together, the SPARK Strategy is also very beneficial on its own.
This isn’t a messaging workshop or copywriting session.
It’s a structured working session where we clarify how your organization is positioned today and where it needs to move next to support its growth.
Because let’s be honest…you probably don’t need another script to follow. You need alignment.
- Your programs have evolved
- Your audience expectations have shifted
- Your reputation is going ahead of you to win new donors and partners
- But your brand is still 5+ years behind
That gap creates friction across everything — fundraising, marketing, partnerships, even internal decision-making.
The SPARK Strategy exists to close that gap.
The 3 Key Steps of the SPARK Strategy Framework
Step 1: Share Your Brand’s Story Through a Guided Questionnaire
Before we meet, I’ll invite you to complete two key questionnaires:
- The Brand Personality Quiz – This helps identify which magnetic brand personality best fits your nonprofit. Think of this like the “tone” and vibe of your brand — the human qualities that make your nonprofit relatable and memorable.
- The Strategy Questionnaire – Around 20 open-ended questions designed to get deep into your mission, your audience, the challenges you’re tackling, and your unique place in the community.
Why it matters:
No two nonprofits are the same, and your strategy shouldn’t be either! This first step ensures that your SPARK Strategy is fully customized to you and built on substance. The more insight you share, the more useful, relevant, and actionable your strategy becomes.
Step 2: I Build Your Strategy Using My Custom GPT Tool
After reviewing all your answers, I synthesize them into a concise, powerful document using my custom GPT (that’s me and my AI-powered system working together!)
Your SPARK Strategy includes:
- Story — A grounded articulation of your purpose, positioning, and direction
- Personality — The traits guiding how your brand shows up and builds connection
- Audience(s) — Who you’re prioritizing today and who represents opportunity tomorrow
- Research — Market context, differentiation, and perception gaps
- Key Priorities — The strategic moves that guide your next phase of growth
Why it matters:
Most strategy documents are dense and theoretical. They’re impressive documents, but rarely used or referenced.
The SPARK Strategy isn’t built to sit in a folder.
It’s designed to guide decisions from visual identity to how you fundraise and attract partners, campaign direction, and internal alignment. Clear, practical, and immediately usable.
Step 3: We Review It Together in a 1:1 Call
Once the draft is ready, we meet for a one-hour working session to walk through it together.
I’ll explain the thinking behind each section, connect the dots across the framework, and invite your perspective and reactions. We refine where needed and explore opportunities surfaced during the process.
Why it matters:
Brand strategy isn’t something that should be done to you…it should be created with you. You know your organization better than anyone, and my job is to help translate your heart and mission into a message that moves people. Together, we make sure the final strategy feels true to your nonprofit and actionable for your team.
Bonus: Add-On Your Own Personality-Powered GPT
Once your SPARK Strategy is refined and finished, you’ll also have the option to add on your very own custom GPT built specifically from your unique strategy and nonprofit’s personality.
Think of it as your always-available messaging assistant. I’ll take your finalized brand strategy and set up a custom GPT tool trained with your nonprofit’s voice, values, audience, and key messages.
You can use it to:
- Draft emails, donor letters, or social media captions that actually sound like you
- Stay consistent across your communication channels
- Save hours every month trying to come up with the “right words”
Why nonprofit leaders love this:
It’s like having an expert marketer in your corner who already knows your mission and how to communicate it. No more second-guessing your tone or reinventing the wheel every time you need to share something new.
Real Client Story: From Unclear to Confident
Last year I worked with Marian, the founder of the Tyler Vincent Knowles Foundation. Like many founders, Marian had the basics in place — a mission statement, a vision, and core values — but she still felt stuck trying to communicate why her organization mattered in a way that resonated with people.
We started with her SPARK Strategy before touching any visuals. Here’s what she shared afterward:
“Before working with HeartSpark, I didn’t have a true brand identity and needed a way to stand out. Lauren’s process was calm, efficient, and effective – she delivered exactly what she promised with integrity and a clear strategy that brought everything together. The brand and tools she created have given me the confidence to communicate our mission clearly and consistently.”
Today, Marian is confidently leading her foundation, and her new brand strategy serves as a guiding light in every conversation she has.
Just like Marian was, you might be wondering…
“We already have a mission, vision, and values… isn’t that enough?”
Great question, and the answer is…not quite.
Your mission and vision statements are valuable, especially for your internal team. But they’re often written in a way that’s broad or formal and not designed to connect with new people.
This is where brand strategy comes in.
Brand strategy might sound lofty, but at its core, it’s just about clearly defining how your nonprofit shows up and connects with people in a sea of other options. It’s an intentional process that spells out your story, your message, the audiences you’re speaking to, the tone of your communication, and how you want people to feel when they engage with your organization.
It’s the difference between saying, “We provide community resources,” and saying, “We make sure no child in our neighborhood goes to bed hungry…and here’s how you can help.”
The SPARK Strategy is the bridge between your internal goals and your external communication so your message lands with the people who need to hear it most.
It helps you take all that heart and purpose behind your organization… and package it into words and phrases that move people to action.
But here’s the thing: most nonprofits have never gone through this process before! But once they do, it makes their mission so much easier to communicate. And I want the same for your nonprofit.
What Happens When You Don’t Have a Brand Strategy?
When your brand strategy is unclear or nonexistent, your message can get muddled over time. That’s when you find yourself:
- Saying something different every time someone asks what your nonprofit does
- Struggling to write web copy or donor letters
- Feeling unsure whether your messaging is “on brand”
- Missing out on donations or partnerships because people just don’t get it
But when you DO have a clear brand strategy?
- You have talking points ready to go.
- You know who you’re speaking to — and how to reach them.
- You show up consistently across platforms.
- And donors start to say: “Now I understand why this matters.”
Ready to close the gap between where you are and where you’re headed?
Your mission may be strong.
Your programs may be growing.
But if your brand still reflects an earlier version of your organization, it can quietly limit the donors, partners, and funders you attract.
The SPARK Strategy Session is designed to realign that.
Together, we define where you stand today, where you want to be known next, and the strategic moves that help you bridge that distance with intention.
